This post is a continuation from our last one regarding protecting and backing up your cloud data. We have decided to follow-up on this topic due to the number of questions we received from readers. Some of those questions were as follows:
Isn\’t backing up my cloud data unnecessary as providers such as OneDrive and Google Docs do this for you automatically?
Where should my backup reside? IE: Online storage provider? USB Drive?
How frequently should I backup my data?
Lets address the 3 questions above as they are collectively the top questions we were asked.
- Isn\’t backing up my cloud data unnecessary as providers such as OneDrive and Google Docs do this for you automatically?
While these large providers seem to have unlimited resources, digital storage being at an all-time high along with the costs to maintain the data centers and secure the data from cyber-attacks is also rising. To keep online storage convenient, safe and reliable these providers can’t keep unlimited copies of your data and are still prime targets for hackers.
Let\’s look back on some of the most recent articles that address this failure:

Let\’s face it. These services are great but you should never rely on their claims of 99.99{e53893828c6617e55677bd7479ef314f8a2ce1ed1ac821396f95bf0cd992c739} uptimes. We can all agree that the .1{e53893828c6617e55677bd7479ef314f8a2ce1ed1ac821396f95bf0cd992c739} of the time they go down will be at the most inconvenient time for you! Don\’t let that happen to you!
2. Where should my backup reside? IE: Online storage provider? Portable or USB Drive?
The good news is there is no shortage of inexpensive storage available to you. From services such as Barracuda and Carbonite to offline solutions such as Portable or USB storage we recommend having copies of your data on both a cloud provider and an offline solution such as a portable or USB drive. According to this article by Barracuda it is best to use the 3-2-1 rule: At least three copies of data, in two different formats, with one copy stored offline or in the cloud. Following this rule remains one of the best ways to protect your data. Barracuda research reveals that 67{e53893828c6617e55677bd7479ef314f8a2ce1ed1ac821396f95bf0cd992c739} of organizations are still relying on built-in Microsoft retention and restoration of deleted folders, despite the complexity of those retention policies and the inability to granularly restore items. That\’s at least 67{e53893828c6617e55677bd7479ef314f8a2ce1ed1ac821396f95bf0cd992c739} of companies that are at a higher risk of data loss.
3. How frequently should I backup my data?
According to experts: Important data should be backed up at least once a week, but preferably once every twenty-four hours. These backups can be performed manually or automatically. A lot of automatic software options are available that you can set to make a backup of your data at a set time of the day or week.
